Vestiges of

Memory

Vestiges of Memory aims to explore and uncover the deeper experiences and emotions encapsulated in the physical objects that are left behind, following an auto-hermeneutic phenomenological approach.

The series of photographs display a range of objects passed on to the grieving through inheritance and in life to two daughters. They are remnants that had retained their sentimental value through fifteen years post-death, enough to survive multiple moves and drastic life changes.

Grief is not just a mental process that you are entagled with, I emphasise that it is also bodily, and therefore necessary to physically engage with the objects surrounding grief, ie. objects left by the deceased.

‘We... still use film and photography but rather than using them to ground the designs in “reality” or designing specifically for video, we prefer to use them to extend the imaginative possibilities of the physical prop, adding more layers and opening up more possibilities... The physical prop is the starting point for a chain reaction developed through other media.’
